A plan suggesting the specifics of how Auckland will house its increasing population has been released.

The draft unitary plan ties together 14 district and regional plans.

It shows that much of the eastern suburbs will be rezoned into a mixed-housing zone, and that areas around town centres will allow for terraced housing and apartments.

A council spokesperson says the mixed-housing zones “will encourage a mix of detached, semi-detached and attached dwellings, units, town houses, terraced houses and small-scale apartment buildings”.

Auckland deputy mayor Penny Hulse says the draft unitary plan sets out what can be built and where.

“The Auckland Unitary Plan is extremely important, it affects every Aucklander and we have to get it right,” she says.

“Please take the time to look at the draft Auckland Unitary Plan, to see what it says about your home, your community and Auckland as a whole – tell us what you think.”
